Poor Jesus! Today there is no room for you and your teaching in the world. What if you returned today and proclaimed in public assemblies and from pulpits, "all who draw the sword will die by the sword" (Matt 26:52), insisted that all who call themselves Christians should keep your law of nonviolence, and demanded that we should respond only with love to violence and unjust attacks, that is, that we conquer evil—the real enemy—only with good? Jesus, if you were to come and publicly demand this, you would be considered a fool, forbidden to preach, judged to be a traitor and imprisoned, or most likely killed.
