Is the love of neighbor, whose source is God and which is commanded by Christ, present in violent self-defense or the appalling struggles of war? Are the horrors of war works of love of the enemy? Does love of neighbor guide the fighting? The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans (13:10): “Love can cause no harm to your neighbor, and so love is the fulfillment of the law,” and my Church teaches me that every person, including the enemy, is my neighbor. Therefore, I am strictly obligated in conscience to conduct myself toward every person with love in my thoughts, words, and actions. The true disciple of Christ has to forgo every form of violence; he has to be a conscientious objector, whatever the consequences.
